Project Scoring Checklist:

  • Learn purpose of the project scoring process;
  • Each candidate project should be examined and scored to define how well the proposed project meets the organizational goals and business strategy. Proposed projects can be then ranged by scores they achieved and submitted for funding decisions.

  • Identify project factors to be appraised and scored for every project application;
  • Some potential project factors to be examined and scored:
    • General eligibility (gateway assessment);
    • Innovative component;
    • Payback period and other financial metrics;
    • Value of expected benefits;
    • Project urgency and opportunity;
    • Riskiness component;
    • Suitability to government programs;
    • Compliance with corporate strategies;
    • Costs-benefits relations;
    • Idea and conception viability;
    • Contribution into competitiveness;
    • Environmental impact (“green” factor);
  • Compose a collection of aspects to be examined in projects that pretend to be incorporated into certain organizational program, or should be approved under certain policy;
  • Define project aspects that create critical value for specific programs or corporate strategy and focus scoring interest upon these factors.

  • Elaborate every specific project aspect into sub-factors as deep as it makes sense;
  • Set scoring scale to adequately rate projects by every important factor (let’s say 1-5, 1-10, etc);
  • A score given to each project factor will characterize appropriateness to organizational goals.

  • Create measuring criteria and develop benchmarking procedures;
  • Develop a way in which you will give appraisal to different aspects of a project.

  • Associate every mark on your scale with certain fixed characteristic on every specific factor;
  • When a project gets a score on some aspect, a certain conclusion should stand behind it.

  • Develop a decision-making model that allows managers to produce objective funding decisions;
  • Make sure there is a conception of successful project score.

  • Assemble a project scoring board comprised of experts who are competent in all related areas;
  • When a candidate project is submitted for consideration define score for every project aspect;
  • This can be done via an expert discussion or using some objective examinations.

  • Make sure every applicant project is completely considered and examined by all factors;  
  • If there are more than one candidate project, then consistently examine them all;
  • Rate projects by their scores and identify the leader for further decisions;
  • For example accept for realization a project with the highest score.

  • If only one project takes part in scoring, then identify further activities to be taken on it – reject the project (if its score is low) or accept it (of score is sufficient);
  • A project with a low score can be supplied with recommendations and redirected for further improvement with an idea of second review when problems will be rectified.
